How to manage stress
Back to blog archive
Stress is an unavoidable part of our life, but the feeling of being constantly stressed out isn’t. When you let stress take over and control you, it can throw you off track. But here are a few helpful tips I find useful to cut down stress.
Listen to relaxing music
Having some down time whilst listening to soothing music can be as effective as getting a massage as it has been shown to have the same benefits. Next time when you’re feeling overwhelmed, just take some time away and chill out listening to some relaxing music. It doesn't even have to be the classical stuff, if your favourite artist has an acoustic version of their music, give that a go. Whatever music makes you relax, hit that play button!
Cut down on the caffeine
Sure you've heard of that before, but caffeine triggers cortisol release which is a hormone that your body releases when you’re stressed out. Sure one or two cups is okay, especially if it’s a fast paced day, but not if it means subjecting your body into overdrive! You’ll even feel much better just by switching to decaf. Personally, as I don't drink coffee, I am trying to cut my intake of tea down by replacing a cuppa here and there with green tea instead. As an avid tea drinker, I’ll let you know how that goes.
Stop hitting that ‘snooze’ button
That extra five minutes in bed sure does seem tempting but it doesn't really have any favourable effects to the level of energy you'll have for the rest of the day. In fact, you’ll be more likely to end up rushing around to complete your morning errands or getting ready to leave the house.
Laugh more
It is true what they say about laughter being the best medicine. Benefits of laughing each day includes; soothing tension, activating and relieving stress response, and also stimulating many of your organs!
Stop procrastinating
We all do it. But when you put off doing the tasks you’re dreading and anxious about, getting them done at a later date will only be harder. Get them done and out of the way to stay calm and in control.
Do some stretching or yoga
Sitting at a desk for long periods of time strains your body, especially your neck, shoulders and back. By doing some light stretches or yoga workouts, it helps relive those areas from tension. It loosens muscles and encourages deep breathing, helping to get rid of stress whilst overall improving your flexibility.
Do a daily affirmation
Even something as simple like “I am thankful for today” or “I can handle this”. Self-affirmation helps lower baseline cortisol levels. It also contributes to having a positive sense of self which can be a vital resource in managing stress.
So next time you’re feeling stressed, just have a go at some of the above steps. Soon you’ll feel a lot better and relaxed.
