Self-isolating can be stressful

As the world deals with the coronavirus crisis, we have all been advised to work from home, self-isolate and keep up with social distancing practices as they are crucial in helping to ‘flatten the curve’ of COVID-19.

For those who are able to work from home or are self-isolating, bunkering down at home can sometimes prove to be difficult. That’s why we have rounded up some great self-care tips that you can use in the comfort of your own home to help you deal with it.

Read… the right stuff though!
If the news and social media posts are getting you more stressed or worried, limit yourself to just some of it. Instead why not read that book you’ve been meaning to for the last month, or what about re-reading your favourite one? Books are a great form of escapism, so diving into one now is not a bad idea at all.

Meditate
If you’re feeling stressed, anxious or worried about the current situation, know that you are not alone and that it is a completely normal response. Meditating has many benefits to ease anxiety and there are a number of apps available to access guided meditations.

Work out
Don’t let staying at home keep you from getting regular exercise. By keeping your body moving it not only helps you stay physically fit and healthy, it is also a great way to boost your mood and motivate you due to the extra endorphins that are released.

Plan
Your normal routine might be disrupted which can throw you off a bit and even cause more stress. Take some time to write down things that you have to do during the day and how you want to spend it. By doing this and sticking to a new routine it will bring back a sense of order and a ‘new normality’ for the time being.

Stay in contact
Connection to others is vital to us and even during this time it’s important to stay in touch with our family and friends. Instead of visiting them or talking in person, we can keep in contact with others by Facetime, Skype, WhatsApp and other messaging / video call platforms. These interactions and conversations can really help during this time, especially if you or someone you know is feeling lonely.

It’s so important to take the time to look after yourself, especially right now. If you are finding the current situation difficult, don’t struggle in silence. Speak to someone you trust, call a friend or a helpline. Currently Bright Light offices are closed, but we are still taking self-referrals via our website. You can easily and quickly self-refer here
